Seacrest Organic produce

Some laughed when George Covert bought this desert-like piece of land back in 1959 – but he, his son, and eventually grandson have grown Covert Farms into a cornerstone in organic farming. The family name is well known across numerous provinces with restaurateurs and grocers alike. Experience fresh organic produce at our in-store location, or pick your own at our organic fields.

Harvest Dates

After three generations of Coverts managing 130+ acres of ground crops, in 2014 Gene Covert (third generation farmer) turned his focus on winemaking and leased organic food growing to Secrest Organics at Covert Farms. Terry, owner of Secrest Organics, has been leading our organics production for a number of years; we consider Terry and his family to be part of the extended Covert family.

Today Covert Farms remains a leader in quality organic fruit and vegetable growing in the Okanagan through Secrest Organics – a major shipper of fresh field tomatoes, sweet onions, sweet corn, muskmelons and table grapes. Secrest Organics at Covert Farms supplies fruit stands and major wholesalers in western Canada, while continuing the tradition of offering fresh produce to the retail public. Our goal is to support a healthy community and help grow agri-tourism in the South Okanagan.

We support tasty, healthy foods and the relationships necessary to bring that about in a sustainable way.  Our vineyard is certified organic, and we embrace biodynamic and permaculture farming methods. The relationships of our land are complex and most have yet to be discovered. As we learn more we find interest, intrigue, and humility. We invite you to explore our farm, to learn about our farming practices and experience a place bustling with life and diversity.

In season, we encourage our wine customers to visit Secrest Organics at Covert Farms and try pick-your-own. The friendly staff at Secrest Organics can assist with your selections and guide you along the way. They grow more than 40 different crops, so you can try something new. Freshly harvested produce is also available in their farm store, steps from our Wine Lounge. Many crops are available from late spring until first frost.

George and Winifred Covert

We're Moving to Canada

In 1959, George and Winifred Covert, Gene’s grandparents, were tired of the pace in California so George decided to explore. He was intrigued by the climate of this area; he had heard it would be suitable to grow soft fruit and vegetables, and that’s what they wanted. When he came on a weekend trip to this valley, the decision was made, and, in the dead of winter, George purchased the undeveloped mesa north of Oliver and went home to tell Winifred, “We’re moving to Canada.”

Philosophy

Only by creating and fostering complexity can we hope to grow food with complex and persistent flavours.  Flavours are the ultimate expression of the mineralization brought about by healthy soil microbial ecosystems.

Biography

As a full-time plein air landscape painter, my work evolves through painting from a heightened state of awareness which allows me to intuitively capture my surroundings.

After 12 years as an Art Director I quit to become a full-time painter in 2014. My plein air paintings are started and completed entirely on site, without reliance on photographs. I paint in oil, which allows me to balance pictorial clarity with subtle tonal contrasts. I let the phenomena of light - shadows, reflections, cast color, - shape my depiction of color and value.

In each of my paintings, I strive to capture the energy from a particular moment in a fresh way. I work thin and loosely in the beginning, but then begin to thicken the paint as I refine the scene. I apply each brush stroke with confidence, spontaneity and intention while remaining open to the unexpected. My technique is to use as few strokes as possible, allowing me to be specific and purposeful with my mark making. My goal is to simplify the complexities of a scene to create my impressions of nature as I work to interpret reality rather than to re-create it. My desire is to create paintings of the wilderness that evoke the same response as viewers have to the Group of Seven.

Mark is an active member of the Canadian Federation of Artists and is currently the artist in residence at Covert Farms in Oliver, BC.
